Everyone is above average

Congratulations – you are now above average!

It may sound like an old, bad statistics joke, but I mean it quite literally. We now have very strong evidence that AI elevates the skills of the lowest performers across a wide range of fields to, or even far above, what was previously average performance. — Read More

An NYPD security robot will be patrolling the Times Square subway station

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is implementing a new security measure at the Times Square subway station. It’s deploying a security robot to patrol the premises, which authorities say is meant to “keep you safe.” We’re not talking about a RoboCop-like machine or any human-like biped robot — the K5, which was made by California-based company Knightscope, looks like a massive version of R2-D2. Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of privacy rights group Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, has a less flattering description for it, though, and told The New York Times that it’s like a “trash can on wheels.” — Read More

WTF is the fediverse?

Imagine posting a thought or piece of content on Threads and having followers from another platform, like Mastodon, like and comment on that post. It’s a possibility that’ll soon come to fruition if Meta keeps its promise to allow the nearly 10 million people who still use Threads to follow and interact with users on other platforms like Mastodon.

This is all thanks to the fediverse, or the federated universe, which is best described as a group of social media networks that are independent but able to communicate with one another. The fediverse’s origins reportedly date back to the early 2000s. But in with an increasingly fragmented social media landscape, Twitter’s decline, data privacy concerns and a colossal creator economy, the promise of cross-platform communication in the fediverse has sparked curiosity for some in the industry, especially with Meta’s plan to make Threads part of it. — Read More

Indeed’s CEO says college students might be learning skills that could go ‘obsolete’ once they graduate — all because of AI

Getting a bachelor’s degree might not be enough to compete with AI in the job market — at least according to Chris Hyams, the CEO of job site Indeed.

In an essay, Hyams shared his top concerns around AI — one of which is how technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT will affect the job market. — Read More

How Google taught AI to doubt itself

… From the day that the chatbots arrived last year, their makers warned us not to trust them. The text generated by tools like ChatGPT does not draw on a database of established facts. Instead, chatbots are predictive — making probabilistic guesses about which words seem right based on the massive corpus of text that their underlying large language models were trained on.

As a result, chatbots are often “confidently wrong,” to use the industry’s term. And this can fool even highly educated people, as we saw this year with the case of the lawyer who submitted citations generated by ChatGPT — not realizing that every single case had been fabricated out of whole cloth. — Read More

The right newsroom jobs for AI, and the wrong ones

As newsrooms around the globe are beginning to harness AI, this week the New York Times posted a job listing for an editor to serve as “newsroom generative AI lead.”

My thought bubble: Good luck to the winning applicant! Journalists, like many other professionals, are fearful and anxious about the new technology, and this is not going to be an easy job — but I’m generous, so here’s a memo with some helpful advice. — Read More

How Will Editors Use AI? The Tech’s Role in Production and Post Scrutinized at IBC

With generative artificial intelligence, all traditional production workflows will be disrupted, said Marco Tempest, a director’s fellow at the MIT Media Lab, of this transformative tech and how it could be used well beyond engineering circles. “I think it’s the first time ever that we’ve been confronted with a technological wave that doesn’t require technologists to take advantage of.”

He made these remarks during a virtual keynote at the annual International Broadcasting Convention, which concluded Monday in Amsterdam. AI, to no surprise, was the biggest topic at the event and messaging about its potential was often optimistic, but at times dicey. — Read More
