raditional web tools are facing an existential crisis as AI products and tools increasingly eat up attention — and therefore market share and money — from a wide swathe of products that people have used for years to interact with the internet. At least, that’s what The Browser Company seems to think is happening.
The company last year decided to stop developing its popular web browser Arc, acknowledging that while Arc was popular among enthusiasts, it never hit scale, as it presented too steep a learning curve to reach mass adoption. The startup has since been heads-down on developing a browser that bakes in AI at the heart of the browser. That browser, called Dia, is now available for use in beta, though you’ll need an invite to try it out. — Read More

Duolingo’s CEO outlined his plan to become an ‘AI-first’ company. He didn’t expect the human backlash that followed
On April 28, Duolingo cofounder and CEO Luis von Ahn posted an email on LinkedIn that he had just sent to all employees at his company. In it, he outlined his vision for the language-learning app to become an “AI-first” organization, including phasing out contractors if AI could do their work, and giving a team the ability to hire a new person only if they were not able to automate their work through AI.
The response was swift and scathing. “This is a disaster. I will cancel my subscription,” wrote one commenter. “AI first means people last,” wrote another. And a third summed up the general feeling of critics when they wrote: “I can’t support a company that replaces humans with AI.” — Read More
Amazon will host free ‘AI Ready’ courses in an effort to boost the AI talent pool
OpenAI may grab all the headlines, but Amazon has been quietly toiling on AI across all its divisions and even using AI-powered robots in its warehouses. Now, in a bid to expand the AI talent pool, the company is launching a free program called “AI Ready,” with the aim of providing generative AI training to two million people globally by 2025.
Consisting of eight free courses, the classes will be available through Amazon’s learning website and offered to non-Amazon employees as well. They’ll teach people AI skills including the generative AI technology that powers ChatGPT and other language models. — Read More
Disney Now Has an Entire A.I. Task Force — Report
The Walt Disney Company has created a “task force” designed to study the use of AI, or artificial intelligence, and how it can be applied across the organization. According to Reuters, the task force was launched earlier this year, before the start of the WGA strike that began in May.
Disney currently lists 11 different job descriptions centered around either artificial intelligence or machine learning, according to Reuters, and they touch multiple sections of the company, including roles in Walt Disney Studios, Parks, Imagineering, Disney Branded Television, and the advertising team. (A quick search pretty easily locates five of the open roles.) — Read More
Every Amazon division is working on generative AI projects
Just like pretty much every other major tech company, Amazon is placing a heavy focus on generative artificial intelligence. CEO Andy Jassy noted on Amazon’s latest earnings call that every division has multiple generative AI projects in the works.
“Inside Amazon, every one of our teams is working on building generative AI applications that reinvent and enhance their customers’ experience,” Jassy said. “But while we will build a number of these applications ourselves, most will be built by other companies, and we’re optimistic that the largest number of these will be built on [Amazon Web Services]. Remember, the core of AI is data. People want to bring generative AI models to the data, not the other way around.” — Read More
Defensibility in the Age of AI
Tl;dr: Companies with technology that allows them to uniquely generate the data needed to train and fine-tune models are well positioned to create enduring value in the age of AI. The best AI companies may be those building in atoms and not just bits.
The pace of development in AI has given many the feeling that the ground is shifting under their feet. While incredibly exciting, this has led to a fair amount of anxiety among entrepreneurs who are wondering if there’s any true defensibility in what they’re building. A battle tested strategy in startups is to build a product that’s at least 10x better, 10x cheaper, or 10x easier than what exists while you march toward a long-term moat. But given how quickly AI development is advancing, a 10x product of last month may be obsolete this month. The fear is real. Read More
Andrew Ng: Forget about building an AI-first business. Start with a mission.
An AI pioneer reflects on how companies can use machine learning to transform their operations and solve critical problems.
Andrew Ng has worn many hats in his life. You may know him as the founder of the Google Brain team or the former chief scientist at Baidu. You may also know him as your own instructor. He has taught countless students, curious listeners, and business leaders about the principles of machine learning through his wildly popular online courses.
Now in his latest venture, Landing AI, which he started in 2017, he is exploring how businesses without giant data sets to draw on can still join in the AI revolution.
On March 23, Ng joined MIT Technology Review’s virtual EmTech Digital, our annual AI event, to share the lessons he’s learned. Read More
