An underground website called OnlyFake is claiming to use “neural networks” to generate realistic looking photos of fake IDs for just $15, radically disrupting the marketplace for fake identities and cybersecurity more generally. This technology, which 404 Media has verified produces fake IDs nearly instantly, could streamline everything from bank fraud to laundering stolen funds.
In our own tests, OnlyFake created a highly convincing California driver’s license, complete with whatever arbitrary name, biographical information, address, expiration date, and signature we wanted. The photo even gives the appearance that the ID card is laying on a fluffy carpet, as if someone has placed it on the floor and snapped a picture, which many sites require for verification purposes. – Read More

Finance worker pays out $25 million after video call with deepfake ‘chief financial officer’
A finance worker at a multinational firm was tricked into paying out $25 million to fraudsters using deepfake technology to pose as the company’s chief financial officer in a video conference call, according to Hong Kong police.
The elaborate scam saw the worker duped into attending a video call with what he thought were several other members of staff, but all of whom were in fact deepfake recreations, Hong Kong police said at a briefing on Friday. – Read More
Sports Illustrated Published Articles by Fake, AI-Generated Writers
We asked them about it — and they deleted everything.
There was nothing in Drew Ortiz’s author biography at Sports Illustrated to suggest that he was anything other than human.
“Drew has spent much of his life outdoors, and is excited to guide you through his never-ending list of the best products to keep you from falling to the perils of nature,” it read. “Nowadays, there is rarely a weekend that goes by where Drew isn’t out camping, hiking, or just back on his parents’ farm.”
The only problem? Outside of Sports Illustrated, Drew Ortiz doesn’t seem to exist. He has no social media presence and no publishing history. And even more strangely, his profile photo on Sports Illustrated is for sale on a website that sells AI-generated headshots, where he’s described as “neutral white young-adult male with short brown hair and blue eyes.” — Read More
Exclusive poll: AI is already great at faking video and audio, experts say
Nearly every respondent (95%) in a new Axios-Generation Lab-Syracuse University AI Experts Survey described AI’s audio and video deepfake capabilities as “advanced.”
Driving the news: 68% said the capabilities are moderately advanced; 27% said they are highly advanced. — Read More
Image of Palestinian carrying children out of rubble shows signs of AI
An image of a man carrying children through rubble has been shared tens of thousands of times in social media posts linking it to Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip, which the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed more than 3,700 children. But experts say the image shows signs of artificial intelligence — and it was not published by news organizations with photographers covering the war, which was triggered by a deadly Hamas attack on Israel. — Read More
How generative AI is boosting the spread of disinformation and propaganda
Governments and political actors around the world, in both democracies and autocracies, are using AI to generate texts, images, and video to manipulate public opinion in their favor and to automatically censor critical online content. In a new report released by Freedom House, a human rights advocacy group, researchers documented the use of generative AI in 16 countries “to sow doubt, smear opponents, or influence public debate.”
The annual report, Freedom on the Net, scores and ranks countries according to their relative degree of internet freedom, as measured by a host of factors like internet shutdowns, laws limiting online expression, and retaliation for online speech. The 2023 edition, released on October 4, found that global internet freedom declined for the 13th consecutive year, driven in part by the proliferation of artificial intelligence. — Read More
Political Disinformation and AI
Elections around the world are facing an evolving threat from foreign actors, one that involves artificial intelligence.
Countries trying to influence each other’s elections entered a new era in 2016, when the Russians launched a series of social media disinformation campaigns targeting the US presidential election. Over the next seven years, a number of countries—most prominently China and Iran—used social media to influence foreign elections, both in the US and elsewhere in the world. There’s no reason to expect 2023 and 2024 to be any different.
But there is a new element: generative AI and large language models. These have the ability to quickly and easily produce endless reams of text on any topic in any tone from any perspective. As a security expert, I believe it’s a tool uniquely suited to Internet-era propaganda. — Read More
Tom Hanks: Advertiser used my AI deepfake without permission
Tom Hanks says an unknown advertiser used an AI-generated version of him to promote dental plans without the actor’s permission. Hanks posted a warning on Instagram, disassociating himself from the AI-generated video. — Read More
‘World Of Warcraft’ Players Trick AI-Scraping Games Website Into Publishing Nonsense
As someone who writes about video games for a living, I am deeply annoyed/terrified about the prospect of AI-run websites not necessarily replacing me, but doing things like at the very least, crowding me out of Google, given that Google does not seem to care whatsoever whether content is AI-generated or not.
That’s why it’s refreshing to see a little bit of justice dished out in a very funny way from a gaming community. The World of Warcraft subreddit recently realized that a website, zleague.gg (I am not linking to it), which runs a blog attached to some of sort of gaming app which is its main business, has been scraping reddit threads, feeding them through an AI and summarizing them with “key takeaways” and regurgitated paragraphs that all follow the same format. It’s gross, and yet it generates an article long enough with enough keywords to show up on Google.
Well, the redditors got annoyed and decided to mess with the bots. On r/WoW, they made a lengthy thread discussing the arrival of Glorbo in the game, a new feature that, as you may be able to guess from the name, is not real. — Read More
Orange France Ad Takes A Powerful Shot At Tackling Long-Held Issues In Football
I first stumbled across this ad on Twitter, with the tweet captioned: ‘Is this the greatest football ad ever?’
… Using VFX and AI deepfake technology, the ad had plastered the faces of France’s most well known male players onto the bodies of the women in the French women’s team. The remainder of the spot showcased the original clips in all their glory, ending with the copy: ‘At Orange we support les Bleues.’
The ad was created by Publicis Groupe’s AI platform Marcel for mobile network Orange France. It is a product of the brand’s partnership with the French Football Federation (FFF) – formed ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand. — Read More
